Gary Stone


Senior Staff Attorney  (Pension Benefits)

Gary Stone is a staff attorney in the Benefits and Employment Law Unit. In 1981, he was hired as a staff attorney by Queens Legal Services, where he had worked the two previous summers while a law student. Since then has been a staff attorney at MFY Legal Services, director of the Disability Advocacy Unit of Queens Legal Services, and managing attorney of MFY’s Community Support Systems Project, a program created to address the legal problems of deinstitutionalized psychiatric patients. While at MFY he coordinated the New York City Committee on the Single Homeless. In 1999 he was hired by Legal Services for the Elderly, where he specialized in pension law, and was supervising attorney for the Mid-Atlantic Pension Counseling Project. When Legal Services for the Elderly was closed in 2007, MAPCP was moved to South Brooklyn Legal Services, where he supervises its work on pension cases. In addition to leading the work of MAPCP, he litigates ERISA and other cases concerning the rights of employees. He was a member of the first graduating class of the six-year Urban Legal Studies Program at the City College of New York and New York Law School. He also has a Ph.D. in history from Columbia University.
