Special Education

SBLS assists parents and students with special education problems through its hotline at (718) 237-5561, Monday – Friday, 9AM – 5 PM, and through its Single Stop program. Common special education problems include

  • failure to provide support services in general education
  • failure to provide early intervention services, and
  • failure to provide other appropriate special education services.

SBLS advocates at every level from Committees on Special Education through federal court.

SBLS staff also make on-site presentations on special education issues to community organizations in Brooklyn.

The Special Education unit is staffed by Sarah Dranoff, Unit Director, Nancy Bedard, Senior Staff Attorney, and Robin Heszkel, Law Graduate.

Child With Cerebral Palsy Must Receive Assistance Getting Down Stairs to Get to School

SBLS attorney Robin Heszkel, a deferred associate from Dewey LeBoeuf, won a case on behalf of a 10-year-old wheelchair-bound boy with cerebral palsy against the Department of Education.
