HIV
The HIV Project helps people who are HIV positive with:
- Housing problems, including evictions and those who need help getting repairs in their apartments
- Problems with scatter-site housing providers
- Welfare benefits problems, including HASA, Food Stamps, and Medicaid
- SSI or SSD problems
- Making legal arrangements for the future care and custody of children
- Family law problems, including foster care, visitation, custody, or guardianship
- Wills, health care proxies, living wills, or powers of attorney
- Consumer law problems, including student loan problems, attachment of bank accounts, or bankruptcy
- Discrimination or breach of HIV confidentiality
The HIV Project also provides:
- Trainings to the staff of community-based organizations on housing, benefits, family law, or advance directive/will issues
- Advice by telephone about ways to better advocate for clients
We serve clients in a broader geographic area than other units at SBLS. Please call 718-237-5546 on any weekday from 9-5 and ask to speak to an intake paralegal who will ask you questions about your situation. Your case will be then reviewed by an attorney and we will notify you as to whether or not we can take your case.

SBLS Successfully Challenges City's Recovery of Retroactive SSI Benefits
When the NYC Human Resources Administration attempted to recover retroactive SSI benefits from our client for benefits already paid to the city by the federal Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) funding, SBLS’s Cathy Bowman launched a challenge to the city’s fair hearing decision.
